The screening will be followed by a hybrid panel discussion with the directors of the film (Edivan Guajajara, Chelsea Greene and Rob Grobman) and a local expert (André Nunes Chaib, Assistant Professor of Globalization and Law at Maastricht University). This is a United Nations Cinema event, organised in collaboration with UNRIC, and with financial support from Gemeente Maastricht.
Ciné ONU or UN Cinema events offer an opportunity for participants to watch highly acclaimed, often award-winning documentaries and to engage in interactive discussions with UN experts and other personalities, oftentimes the filmmakers themselves.
Climate, human rights, sustainable development, peace and security are just some of the important global issues that have been featured in screenings.
The events draw a diverse and large audience and allow for them to engage with issues the UN works on.
Background of the film
In the heart of the Amazon, thousands of people are illegally invading protected areas and destroying ancient forests for raw materials and quick profits. Now that the health of the entire Amazon region is at stake, the question is whether Brazil and the world will take action.
On the one hand, indigenous ranger Marçal Guajajara and indigenous leader Puyr Tembé risk their lives to protect their ancestral lands from brutal deforestation. On the other side we find Valdir, an illegal logger, caught in a desperate struggle to make ends meet. He sees no other way than to continue cutting down the forest.
This is the powerful narrative at the heart of We Are Guardians — a story of hope and resilience amidst an unfolding crisis. The film is an exploration of the human spirit and our collective responsibility to protect the fragile balance of our world. Ultimately, it illuminates a path forward, where hope and unity can guide us toward a brighter future for the Amazon and our planet.
