Our institute has received the sad news of the passing away of Wolfgang Scholz in early June 2020.
Wolfgang was a key member of the ILO team that collaborated with the Economics Department at Maastricht University to start a mid-career Master’s programme in Social Protection for social security professionals in Maastricht in 2001. This Master’s programme grew in scope and outreach to become what is now known as the Maastricht Graduate School of Governance.
A rich source of information on the state of the art and recent developments worldwide, Wolfgang never hesitated to share his experiences. He was always prepared to advise us on content, curriculum and teaching methodologies, and he clearly enjoyed his role as a guest lecturer. By the same token, students appreciated his very engaged role in debates and discussions. Simply put, he understood the art of teaching in an enthralling way.
We remember Wolfgang as a skilful colleague with his heart in the right place, but above all we remember him as a friend with a wonderful sense of humour and an ability to put things into perspective. Looking back, there were countless exchanges that ended in bursts of laughter that were hard to ignore.
The staff and the institute send their heartfelt condolences to his family and friends and wish them strength at this difficult time.
