The year ends with two more lectures in our joint seminar series. On Monday 16 December, Prof. Manuel Mira Godinho presents “The Impact of African Science: A Bibliometric Analysis”. He argues that African research output has grown faster than the world average since 2004, while doubling in number and having higher impact than similar publications from Russia, India or Brazil. However, the continent’s production remains highly concentrated in South Africa and Egypt, both in terms of publications and university rankings.
On Tuesday 17 December, Prof. Sunil Mani explains the “Changing leadership in computer and information services: The emergence of India as the current world leader in computer and information services”. He argues that IT leadership shifted from the USA, UK and Germany first to Ireland and then to India, partly due to the availability of highly trained software engineers. He notes how, in parallel, multinational corporations have increased both their presence in India and their innovative activities, but warns that the sustainability of leadership depends on ownership – i.e. domestic or foreign.
