Maastricht University (UM) has risen to 4th place in the 2016 Times Higher Education (THE) ‘150 Under 50’ ranking for the best young universities in the world. Having held 6th place for the last three years, UM said it was “proud to have its continued efforts, for example toward internationalisation, affirmed in this new THE ranking”.
According to the THE website, these rankings celebrate “young universities that have made a great impact on the global stage in years rather than centuries and showcases the future rising university stars. The table uses the same 13 performance indicators as the flagship Times Higher Education World University Rankings – measuring institutions on their teaching, research, citations, international outlook and knowledge transfer – but the methodology has been recalibrated to give less weight to reputation.”
Additionally, UM ranked 14th in the 2016 THE list of the most international universities in the world. “The international outlook indicator considers each institution’s proportion of international staff, proportion of international students and proportion of research papers published with at least one co-author from another country. All the institutions that feature in the top 800 of the overall 2015-2016 ranking have been considered,” said the THE website.
